In the cleaning industry, do you ever feel like there's too much competition? It seems like every day I look in my town's local Facebook group, I see someone asking for recommendations of cleaners and, within an hour, there are 30 "pick me!" replies. Sigh

Instead of jumping at every opportunity, I learned that I was better off determining my dream client and then finding out what subsect of the market they would fit into. I've heard that term "niching down", and I just rolled my eyes. Why wouldn't you want to market to everyone?

Well, when you market to everyone, no one sees it. That's why you need a "niche"; a specialty, if you will. Think about it, if you are trying to see a heart surgeon, you wouldn't go to a family medicine doctor to get the surgery, you'd search for heart surgeons. Let's discover how you can be a heart surgeon amid family doctors.

Successful cleaning business owners find a niche to profit in their cleaning business.
Successful cleaning business owners find a niche (a specialty) in the industry in order to profit the most from their cleaning business.

Step 1: The Most Profitable Cleaning Niches for 2025

Air BnB and Vacation Rental Cleaning

Yes, people are still vacationing in 2025! LOL. And the hotel business is suffering because vacation rentals are thriving. Whether people are vacationing alone, taking a family trip, or traveling for work, they tend to look to more "comfortable" places, which often ends up being cheaper.

Cue the need for residential house cleaners.

These vacation rentals need to be cleaned each time a customer checks out, and that could be as often as every weekend or even every 3 days!

Browse a vacation rental app in your area, and contact the owners to see if they need a reliable house cleaner for their vacation rental properties.

Luxury Home Cleaning for High-Income Clients

Go for the fat cats. Every metro has a suburb nearby, and they have the money to spare! They know the value of being able to throw money at a problem, and house cleaning is a task they will definitely pay for to get done by someone other than themselves.

Focus your marketing efforts on appealing to high-income clients.

Post-Construction Cleaning

Spoiler alert: post-construction cleaning has the potential to make a HUGE profit margin! Cleaning up after new buildings are ready for tenancy is a need that every construction contractor has.

Find some home developers near you and work closely with them to form a partnership that is mutually beneficial.

Step 2: How to Choose a Niche That Works for YOU

First, you have to think about your strengths and interests. What kind of work do you enjoy?

Is one of your top skills moving swiftly yet effectively? Try out vacation rentals.

Do you enjoy leaving little finishing touches to make the client feel appreciated? Look into luxury home cleaning.

Next, research the demand in your area. Gather intel by scrolling through Facebook groups to see what kinds of niches you see often and what you may enjoy. Check job listings to see if there is a particular need for a type of cleaning (such as green cleaning).

Then complete a competitor analysis. You should look at your main competitors and see how you measure up. Find out where they are leaving customers disappointed and focus your efforts on making up in those areas.
