Women, Stop Undercharging! How to Price Your Cleaning Services for Profit

One of the biggest mistakes I see women in the cleaning industry (Black women and women of color in particular) make is underpricing their cleaning services. It hurts my soul to see how we are charging less than others but still are working as hard - or even harder in many cases.
We've been conditioned to "charge less to get the job", but all this does is lead to burnout. We have dreams of becoming successful cleaning business owners, but that can't be done on nickel-and-dime jobs.
Let's talk about how we can help ourselves meet the goals we've set for our cleaning businesses.

Step 1: Know Your Worth (Then Add Tax and Gratuity!)
You must know that your time and skills are valuable! You obviously work hard and produce desirable results, one of the reasons why your customers keep coming back to you.
So stop treating your cleaning business like a side hustle.
The clients you are looking for will respect your pricing because they respect your work. How many times have we experienced that the customers who are the most difficult usually pay less than your other clients? That's because they don't respect your work. They are looking for someone who will do whatever they want because they believe the cleaner is desperate for money.
Know your worth. Add tax to that. And then tip yourself.
Step 2: The Simple Formula for Pricing Profitably
One of the top questions I hear is, "how would you price this job?" Well, that depends. The service area, the way I value my work, the expectations my clients would have of me may differ greatly from your situation. But here's the most basic formula to help guide you on pricing your services:
Hourly Rate Based on Expenses + Tax + Profit Margin = What You Should Charge for Your Cleaning Service
This is the absolute bare minimum you should be charging for your services. You also have to consider other factors such as your service area's market rate, any specialty equipment you have to operate, transportation, etc.
Step 3: Confidently Tell Clients Your Rates
Practice saying your rates without hesitation. Clients pick up on uncertainty and will try to negotiate your rates and services.
Here's a tip. Write down your services and the price of each one. Consider packages and a la carte options. Then, make a game plan. Think of objections or discounts that customers may ask for, and be prepared to answer them confidently by practicing saying your rates without hesitation.
It may seem silly, but say it out loud in front of a mirror. Would you take yourself seriously? If not, work on your confidence.
